Volkswagen R Division makes a triumphant return to the Nürburgring ("Green Hell") with an exciting project in the works. The team has officially confirmed its participation in the 2027 edition of the legendary 24-hour race, marking the 25th anniversary of the iconic Golf R32 hatchback from 2002 that kickstarted the whole R lineup. This exciting update comes from the folks at Carscoops. The latest racing beast from Volkswagen has been unveiled as the Golf R 24h. For this special project, the company has teamed up with Max Kruse Racing, known for their impressive performances at the Nordschleife with the Golf GTI Clubsport 24h over the past three years. The conceptual version has already been revealed, giving a glimpse of the direction they are heading in. Based on the production Golf R, the new car features a serious aerodynamic package. It boasts an enlarged front splitter, ventilated hood, widened wheel arches, a towering rear wing, and a fitting diffuser. The racing version sits noticeably lower than its road-going sibling and sports proper racing wheels wrapped in slick tires. Visually, the new model bears a resemblance to the existing GTI Clubsport 24h, which is no surprise given the shared platform and team involvement. However, the design is expected to undergo further tweaks before its racing debut scheduled for 2027. The major upgrade compared to its predecessor lies beneath the hood and in the drivetrain. Unlike the front-wheel-drive setup of the GTI Clubsport 24h, the Golf R 24h is equipped with all-wheel drive, aligning it more closely with the road-going version of the hot hatch.
